If we are serious about answering the question in the title of this article, we have no choice but to go as far back into history as we can. Only then can we start the work of properly orienting ourselves in the time and space we currently find ourselves.
I work as a supervisor and facilitator for a cultural program for youth of African descent. The program supports participants on their journey of maturity through an African cultural lens, particularly in response to the systemic belittling, discrediting, diminishing, and demonizing of African people and culture, and the detrimental effects that this has on the development and success of African youth and communities.
The concept of "rites of passage" is the basis of the program, drawing inspiration from particular African cultural processes that youth undergo in order to move into responsible adulthood. One of the key questions that we explore, and one of the most important questions a human being can ask to gain a meaningful sense of who they are and why they exist is "How did I come to be?"
