Modern Vs. Afro-Indigenous Astrology: An Astrologers Perspective
To anyone who may consider pursuing astrology, and to those who have mastered it; there is another side of the coin that the fathers of modern astrology did not receive from Kemet.

Many have seen how our ancestors mapped the sky in the temple of Denderah, and continue to work to reach what they have accomplished. When we look at where we are with modern astrology today we will notice a few things missing. Astrology as we know it today has become disconnected from what was once practiced in the temples of Kemet. We also notice pieces of information inherited from Kemet, without understanding or explanation.
My journey into astrology began roughly a decade ago. I had a personal experience that ignited my interest in the field. In my first year of training, another astrologer recommended that I go to Kebtah to get the Kemetic Sidereal Calendar and Mandala of Denderah. I was told Kebtah had the only astronomically correct calendar that existed, and it would help me in my journey.
I followed the instructions and purchased the calendar, Mandala, and the Sidereal Calendar lecture video by Neb Naba Lamoussa Morodenibig. I was so excited to watch the video and back in those days you had to wait for the recording to be delivered in DVD format, so it was like waiting for Christmas Day for me. After watching the video I was humbled. Up until that point in my life I had considered myself to be smart. But I had just realized what true intelligence was, and Neb Naba displayed it flawlessly. Everything he displayed in the recording became a curriculum that would dictate the next decade of my life.
Most may think that my experience with afro-indigenous astrology began there, but no, I persisted to master the basics of modern astrology after feeling challenged by what Neb Naba presented in the recording. I wanted to understand how to flawlessly do the same calculations that he had presented to my awareness in the recording.
I spent that time learning to do all the necessary calculations to be able to practically cast an astrology chart in my mind. As most professional astrologers can nearly do such tasks as calculating the position of the sun, moon, and other planets just by knowing what day it is, the rest comes automatically. Essentially learning to have a moving map of the stars in your head. Knowing what time it is based on the position of the sun without needing a clock, or measuring the distance of stars and the rate that they move without an app or doing the math on paper each time. It took me many years, but I studied the most popular and lesser known names in Ancient Astrology from the Persians, Muslims, Greeks and ancient Jyotish astrologers of India.
Neb Naba had presented something to my consciousness that the modern world was not able to quench. After a few years I had made my decision to focus and master Hellenistic astrology. I chose Hellenistic astrology as it was most closely related to what came from Kemet, and many of the well known ancient Greek astrologers also reference the months of the Kemetic calendar in their writings when they list the positions of the planets. I learned from Guido Bonatti, Ptolemy, Dorotheus, and many others.
I came to realize that what Neb Naba had said was true. Many astrologers accept the largest cycle of 1,461 years of the Sirius star. I was not able to find one ancient or modern astrologer who was able to explain the reasoning or understanding of the Sirius cycle. It is simply accepted because that number (1,461) has always been passed down. I was told that number and to accept it as it is; not to ask where it came from because no one really knows, it just works.
As I know there is a certain skepticism and critical eye that gets developed in the heavy and methodical process of practicing Hellenistic astrology. It’s a process that does not reward intuition, emotions, or belief, only facts. Because of that I am sharing my experience to say that any professional in the field who considers afro-indigenous astrology will not be able to ignore the validity of what it offers. Afro-indigenous astrology understands the reasoning, logic, and history related to the 1,461 year cycle of the Sirius star. In the transmission from Kemet to the Greek world, something essential didn't make the journey. The techniques spread, but the deeper philosophy and the responsibility that guided their use did not.
I recognize many benefits to practicing modern astrology. But it also has its limitations. Limits that if we were to seriously consider, we would have to investigate where the Greeks themselves learned the practice. Who taught them the 36 decans that they renamed after their Greek gods? In the fragmented papyri that many astrologers study; where did the priest of Osiris come from that consulted with the King regarding the different meanings of the eclipses and how they would affect his people? These are the questions that brought me to afro-indigenous Kemetic astrology, better known as Bayuali.
At this point in my journey, I returned to Kebtah’s website to see what help they could provide, and that is when I discovered the monthly Bayuali divinations posted online for free! I highlight the fact that at that time they were free, because the value of the monthly Bayuali is incomprehensible. I understood how much effort had to go into creating a monthly chart so you can imagine the surprise and disbelief that KEBTAH was practically giving them away.
I continued to practice my monthly astrology readings and supplement my own personal readings with what was provided in Rising Firefly’s Monthly Bayuali. It sharpened my reading ability and increased my own accuracy to read the stars. I was able to fix a few mistakes inherent in modern astrology. Many things I would see in my monthly astrology readings would show up in the Bayuali reading. But I was still missing something….
The key difference that I want to highlight here is the limit that modern astrology has inherited from its Greek parents. At best, astrology can show what will occur, when and who will be involved. You can even work on your precision to determine the exact time of day that an event will occur and where it is likely to happen. But one way that the Bayuali blatantly outshines it is in the HOW. The Bayuali does everything modern astrology can do but it also shows you how to deal with the energies and the events that will occur. This was a profound realization for me. This realization if studied carefully will expose many holes in the foundation of modern astrology.
As I continued to use the monthly Bayuali readings I realized that it mentioned the Cosmic and Earth energies. In modern astrology, we take no consideration of the Earth in readings, and this is a major oversight as we are standing right on top of it. Hellenistic astrology considers the seven planets closest to the earth, but again, not the Earth itself. What if you see an event that will take place this month, but you don’t know how to avoid it? What if you see an upcoming week of challenging energies in the month? You may just accept it as it is and get through it as best as you can.
You may detail the exact events that will occur during that time and even identify who will be involved. But that is where Bayuali is so useful. I could easily identify what sicknesses or incidents to be careful of each month, but the Bayuali showed me how to deal with situations during that difficult period to make sure the energies are dealt with favorably. There were times that I had avoided situations, incidents, and sicknesses altogether. To even say that to another astrologer would be taboo and breaks the entire framework that modern astrology is built on. Their idea is that everything is predetermined and cannot be avoided.
To anyone who may consider pursuing astrology, and to those who have mastered it; there is another side of the coin that the fathers of modern astrology did not receive from Kemet. And it is still preserved today in Meritah (Africa). Fate is not written in stone and predestined as modern astrology tends to push on to society. Use of the Bayuali shows that as situations develop, our interaction with reality contributes to how events will continue to unfold and develop afterward.
