In the quiet of nature or on a working farm, an animal is just that, an animal. Simple. Dogs keep the farm safe, cats handle the pests, chickens lay eggs, and goats graze. Each has a purpose that supports the whole. In the West, the way we see animals has changed dramatically over the past 50 years. Animals are now treated as tiny humans, beloved like children, showered with luxuries, and even human-like identities. With Americans spending a staggering $136.8 billion on pets last year, more than the GDP of many nations, pets have gone from companions
to luxury dependents. Organic dog treats, canine psychologists, and even pet seats in restaurants illustrate just how far we’ve gone in blurring the line between human and animal.
