In the past, and even today around various indigenous communities, women are held in high esteem as the backbone of family, community and ultimately civilization as a whole. When women are strong in character, rooted in purity and in harmony with nature it reverberates through everything around them. When a child is born, the destiny of that child comes through the mother and it is her responsibility to make sure the child grows and acquires everything needed to fulfill that destiny. In other words, it is through the woman that the destiny of the child is negotiated.
This is a major responsibility of women. As women, we carry children in our wombs, nourish and nurture them as they grow into adulthood. Naturally, we are the primary caregivers. A woman is not only the biological facilitator of life but also its moral and spiritual gatekeeper. The proverb “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the nation” speaks directly to the power and influence that women wield in the shaping of humanity.
